1.What led you to become a yoga instructor?
The path to becoming a yoga instructor was not one I ever expected to take. I didn't even know what yoga was. Having practiced ballet, gymnastics, and even minored in modern dance at university, where I also coached gymnastics. I was first introduced to yoga through its physical aspects. I thoroughly enjoyed the connection between breath and anatomical movements, which I had yet to experience in my twenty-three years of being on this planet. I attended yoga classes regularly soon after my first yoga class. It would not be an exaggeration to say that I was hooked. I fell in love with the physical aspects of yoga over two years, and I found teachers that I felt in alignment with. After one class, as I was packing up my yoga mat, the teacher said, "Ashley, can you come up here?" I happily walked to the front of the class, and she said, "Ashley, I think you should be a yoga teacher" - which was the last thing I thought she was going to say. Within a week, I had enrolled in my first yoga teacher training course at Miami Yogashala. The experience of yoga teacher training changed my life for the better and forever; I learned that yoga was not just the physical shapes, i.e., "poses," but also so much more. I learned that yoga is a philosophy and a lifestyle, a set of suggestions for life. I learned meditation, the yamas, and niyamas (the eight limbs of yoga). Furthermore, I learned the exquisite design that is yoga, a system designed to liberate you from your thinking mind and illusory attachments. Since I was very young, I knew I always wanted to help others. I have two categories of favorite yoga poses: those that are physically beneficial and those that are mentally beneficial. Anything we do using coordinated breath with anatomical movements or in a sustained anatomical shape is beneficial. Some anatomical shapes are more physically beneficial than others, while others are more mentally beneficial than others. My favorite physically beneficial pose is pincha mayarasana, also known as peacock pose. I love this pose because it is an arm balancing pose that involves your elbows digging into your belly, facilitating digestion, elimination, and stimulation of internal organs. My favorite mentally beneficial pose would be ashtavrakasana, the crooked eight limbs sage pose. This one is a lot of fun because it reminds you that you are so much stronger and able than you think you are. Ashtavrakasana is also an arm balancing pose that involves two hands only on the ground or yoga mat, and both legs shooting out in one direction. The bottom foot goes on top!

Nanci's ultimate goal is to empower her clients to integrate all the different aspects of themselves into one effortlessly aligned mind and body. Nanci's journey began in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she grew up and earned a BS in Managerial Economics from the University of California, Davis. She pursued a career in public relations and business development before a curiosity for exploring human behavior led her to earn a graduate degree in Organizational Psychology. During her advanced studies, she focused her research on emotional intelligence and conflict resolution, drawing inspiration from notable figures such as Kenneth Wapnick, Viktor Frankl, and Paul Ekman.
A serious car accident and subsequent injuries prompted Nanci to defer her plans for obtaining a PhD and instead turn to journaling and meditation to cope with the physical pain during the rehabilitation process. After discovering the healing power of Pilates for post-rehabilitation, Nanci became a certified Pilates instructor from Turning Point Studios in Walnut Creek, CA. She later completed an additional certification in Movement Medicine.
With her unique blend of psychology, mindfulness, and Pilates, Nanci built a thriving private post-rehabilitative Pilates and spiritual life coaching practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, Nanci offers private and group sessions, as well as an intensive program, all provided virtually via Zoom, making her expertise accessible to clients all over the world.
We had the pleasure of doing a Q & A with Nanci Reed, a Pilates Instructor. Nanci is also an Author, Intuitive Healer and Spiritual Life Coach. Nanci has a passion for aligning your Mind, Body, and Spirit with Love rather than limitations.
1. What motivated you to become a Pilates instructor?
Pilates found me as rehabilitation after a serious car accident that injured my shoulder and spine. Pain was my main motivation initially or really the desire to end my pain to be exact. The accident haunted me physically and emotionally. I tried everything and anything to heal. Nothing provided more than a temporary fix until I discovered Pilates. From my first session I felt hopeful and more connected to my body and mind than ever prior. After a year of diligently attending private sessions plus practicing my ‘homework’ at home, my shoulder pain lessened by about 99%. It was nothing short of a miracle. Blown away by own results plus fascinated by the process of healing via an approach that empowered a mind-body connection, guided me to become a teacher myself and to share this mindset and practice with others.
2. Why should someone work with a Pilates Instructor?
Pilates is a mindful practice. A client should come with an open and curious mind in addition to desiring to move their body. Pilates addresses the whole person: Body, Mind, and Spirit. It is a powerful approach to integrating mindful movement into daily life and activities. If you’re wanting to move more freely, strengthen your core and balance your body, Pilates will meet you wherever you are now and then join you on your journey to become the best you possible. It adapts to you and is accessible to anyone willing to connect with its core teachings and approach.
3. What makes you unique as a Pilates Instructor?
I’m also an Author, Intuitive Healer and Spiritual Life Coach, in addition to being a Pilates Instructor. Wearing so many ‘hats’ allows me to work with any client no matter their age, fitness level, pre-existing injuries or chronic conditions. I’ve worked with Hollywood A-listers, desiring a specific look for a television series, and also retirees wanting to carry groceries with greater ease, or business owners hoping to improve their postures so their daily commute is less taxing on their bodies. In all, I’ve worked with over 1000 private clients since beginning my business. Happily Ever Living is my signature process for empowering Self-Healing within each client via Pilates plus Practical Spirituality. There are no cookie cutters here though: I tailor each program to the specific client’s needs and personal goals. It’s a collaborative effort. My hope is to inspire each client to gently align their mind, body and spirit with Love, not limitations and to be a part of their Self-Healing Process, not apart from it.
4. How have your clients' lives improved as a result of working with you?
I’ve been so fortunate to connect with clients all around the world. One client that sticks out in my mind is a woman that had a chronic ankle injury and literally arrived to see me on crutches and after one session together, addressing the imbalances she’d overlooked, she actually left my studio walking on her own. I share many more examples of similar ‘impossible’ transformations in my new book, ‘Happily Ever NOW’ (Not AFTER everything else is perfect). It’s a gentle guide for overcoming the paralysis of perfectionism by embracing our innate guidance. So often the Pilates clients that find me are also lifelong perfectionists. Part of our work together involves them reframing ‘how’ they see their body and trying-on a new lens led by kindness and curiosity instead of preconceived judgments or comparisons. Helping my clients to embrace their body being perfectly imperfect invites Healing on every level. In my book I highlight several clients and share their specific story and transformation.

Jenna’s Story
“My goal isn’t to get rid of my pain but rather to learn how to be at peace while I’m in it.”
Jenna is another client of mine who challenged my preconceptions about the power of self-healing. I’d been running an advertisement in a local magazine where the tagline was. “I believe in the possibilities of the body.” Seeing that line prompted Jenna to set up her first session with me.
At the time, she was recently divorced, in her mid- forties, and ran a successful start-up in the Bay Area. On the surface, it looked like Jenna was “living the dream.” What she kept hidden, though, was a night-mare she’d been trapped in for over a decade: chronic knee pain. As soon as our eyes met during her initial session, my Inner Voice encouraged me to ask her, “What is your heart’s desire, really, to accomplish during our time together?” I put emphasis on the word “really” to let her know that it was safe to share her true intention and hopes with me.
An alchemical stillness filled the studio space as she considered her response. At last, she heard her Truth with succinct clarity and shared, “My goal isn’t to get rid of my pain but rather to learn how to be at peace while I’m in it.”
I was blown away by the underlying meaning in her statement. I nodded and said, “I understand. Let’s discover all of what’s possible for you to feel peaceful inside your mind no matter what your body is feeling at any given moment. What else should I know before we begin?”
Jenna shut her eyes, scanning through a lifetime of memories. “Well, you should know I’ve tried just about everything to solve this issue and to stop the pain,” she said. “Like, literally everything. I’ve thrown more money at ceasing my pain than I care to admit. I’m ashamed about my lack of progress. It seems like no matter what I try, the result is still the same: I’m miserable and exhausted from feeling miserable. I can’t even remember what it’s like to move my knee without agony. I know I have before, but my body can’t recall the feeling anymore. Maybe the pain will never go away. Maybe instead I need to learn to live with the pain without being miserable about it being there. After hearing about you from friends and seeing your ad, I’m hoping you can help me approach my pain differently. Can you?”
“Yes,” I told her. “I believe I can help you approach your pain differently, but ultimately, it’s going to come down to your decision to accept another way of interacting with your body or to keep feeling stuck by your pain…’
My book also is a part memoir where I share my own, nonlinear Self-Healing Journey with Pilates and Practical Spirituality as my guides. I also offer a one week mindset reset as well as a 12-week self-study course to further empower and inspire the reader’s Self-Healing Process.

Yoga has left an indelible mark on my life, enriching it in countless ways. One of the most profound experiences occurred in 2017 when I climbed Imja Tse, a mountain in Nepal's Himalayas. As a solo female mountaineer, I encountered numerous challenges, both physically and mentally. Yoga became my solace, with practices such as meditation, mindfulness, and pranayama serving as invaluable tools to help me persevere. My practice brought clarity, focus, and a deep connection to the present moment, propelling me to new heights, both literally and metaphorically. What lead you to become a yoga instructor?
I became a yoga instructor years after feeling my increased flexibility, open hamstrings, stronger core, better upper body strength and inner calm.

How has yoga shaped your life for the better?
Yoga has assisted me with courage and confidence to give back with a livelihood that is very rewarding.
Question 3:
What are some of the transformations you have witnessed in your clients lives since they started doing yoga daily?
I don't think my clients do asana everyday. I lead most clients in a yoga practice twice a week. I see and they tell me about their positive transformations in a variety of ways in their bodies and minds. Examples; better balance, more open hips, looser neck and shoulder muscles and more trust and appreciation with the yoga process of engagement.

Share with us, your favorite yoga poses and why?
Halasana and the variation with knee on the floor by my ears called
Karnapidasana. Since these are more advanced asana, I only teach to certain clients and groups. I just happen to have a spinal column that feels happy in this asana.

The Solution to Ease Symptoms of Menstruation (period) and Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Your lifestyle can reduce the severity of symptoms. What type of foods you eat has an impact on your symptoms. Eating a well-balanced diet of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Eat less salt, sugar, caffeine and alcohol. Get enough sleep and rest. How much exercise you get, physical activity even has health benefits that extends to help with PMS and your period cycle. Taking long hot baths during your female moon cycle helps ease symptoms as well. Developing wellness habits of taking baths regularly so you can make time in your schedule in the evenings for bath time, working out and ensuring you are cutting out sugary foods can help alleviate your PMS and period symptoms. What is Sleep?
Sleep is a naturally occurring state of unconsciousness, when the electrical activity of the brain is more rhythmical than when awake and reacts less to outside stimuli. There are two basic sleep states: deep sleep, known as non-REM (NREM) sleep, when the body repairs itself, interrupted by episodes of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, when most dreaming takes place. Establishing a calming routine that helps you wind down and relax before bedtime will go a long way in helping you to get a good night’s sleep.
How Much Sleep?
The amount of sleep necessary to be fully rested varies for each individual, and it decreases with age. Most adults get by on seven to eight hours sleep, though some sleep experts claim we need more. The elderly can function on five or six hours a night.

Sleep is one of the first things to suffer when you are stressed, and too little sleep will make you tired and irritable. Q & A with Paty Mariposa
1. What motivated you to get into Reiki?
My Reiki journey began in 2009, the year my sister was diagnosed with lung cancer. She was 31 when diagnosed. She eventually opted for alternative healing instead of chemotherapy. She learned what she could about the cancer and sought to understand what her body was telling her. I found it fascinating and different. At that time I had just moved from my Peace Corps volunteer experience after completing 29 months in El Salvador to Las Cruces, New Mexico. I was beginning a dual Master's in Social Work and Public Health. It was a shock for me as well. She was living in Atlanta, GA. We talked every week and she'd share what she was learning and processing. I first heard about Reiki after sharing my story with Sarah Heartsong, a new friend I met through the Unitarian Universalist Church. She was also a social worker. She mentioned one day about an upcoming Reiki class she was going to teach. I immediately said yes even though I had no idea what Reiki was like. The class was amazing as I learned about a different way to look at life without fear of doing something wrong. Reiki I learned was about love entering our energetic body just by asking for it. Since then, I have been incorporating Reiki into my healing practice and have had the opportunity to share it with groups and individuals world wide. I teach Reiki in English and Spanish, plus offer monthly Reiki shares so that people can experience Reiki without cost. I practice Reiki every day and it helps me to stay calm and relaxed most of the time.
2. Why should someone work with a Reiki Practitioner?
Working with a Reiki Practitioner offers you the opportunity to fully let go on a massage table. The people called to work with a Reiki practitioner want a spiritual experience. My clients are ready to work on their trauma and stressors without talking about it in depth. It helps the mind release stress and the body release the tension. Some of my clients are able to experience images or colors that they otherwise have never encountered. Once a month sessions help maintain balance and clear the energy systems. Just like you'd take your car for an oil change, a reiki session clears the energy channels. Learning Reiki is also a wonderful way to take self-care into your hands so to speak. When I teach Reiki 1 I focus the class on trauma and how to use Reiki for self-care.
3. How have your clients' lives improved as a result of working with you?
Often my clients express their gratitude about having felt heard and understand. Many of my clients feel alone and disconnected due to previous traumas in their lives. Within one of my sessions they share their deepest secrets that they may not have shared in depth with another person and release the self inflicted shame they carried. Many of my clients have transformed their lives simply because they learned to see a new perspective I was able to help them see. I've helped clients find their ideal coping skills that they could use whenever their lives become too difficult at the moment.
4. What is the best piece of wellness advice you can give?
When it comes to wellness, it's important to listen to what your body is telling you. If you have no idea why you have a bloated belly after you eat a meal, then that's something to learn about. There are numerous practitioners who can help you understand and reconnect to your body. Reiki, is a technique that can help your body relax so that you can heal. Yet it's important to understand the underlying cause of whatever is causing you the most stress. Managing how you react to stress is key because of stressors caused by external or internal reasons.

Q & A with Carmelle Jean-Francois
1. What motivated you to become a Fitness Trainer?
I was in a serious car accident about 16 years ago and broke myself up pretty good. As I healed, it was the resilience of my body that inspired me to help it heal and become stronger than before. This was a big deal because I spent the previous decade as a sedentary person. So as I got stronger, I continued to challenge my body to see what else it can do; how far can I push myself. I gained a tremendous amount of appreciation for how the body moves and how it functions and the role movement and nutrition played in that healing. We are perfect machines! Before long, my peers, colleagues, family and friends took notice in my leaner physique and started asking questions and seeking advice. I enjoyed sharing my process so much that I was inspired to get a personal trainer certification. And today I coach keeping mind body, soul and spirit in mind when we tackle wellness. I just love sharing and being a part of someone else's health and fitness journey.
2. Why should someone work with a Fitness Trainer?
For many reasons... inspiration, motivation, confidence, accountability, structure, efficiency but I think the most important reason is for guidance. Sometimes I'll see folks working out without a coach or trainer and it looks like they're about to hurt themselves- pull something. Or they're stuck doing only one type of exercise because they don't know what else to do and they don't know that there could be another exercise that will challenge them in another way or earn them better results. But the biggest issue I see is women trying to power through an exercise or find motivation when there are other underlying issues that have to be addressed first. I'll give you an easy example: trying to over exercise, a bad diet... It's all connected... again: mind body, soul and spirit.
3. How have your clients' lives improved as a result of working with you?
I get these emails and texts from past clients with updates telling me how much improved their health and mindset has been since working with me. Sometimes it's overall health, sometimes it how many pounds they've released- and I think to myself: They did it without me... But nooo!! I was a part of their journey- I contributed! Whether it was a small contribution or something in an immense way, they would not be writing if I didn't sprinkle some of my passion on to them. I don't want my clients to need me forever. I want them to take what I've shared with them even when they're no longer working with me. It warms my heart and makes my day when I get those emails now because I see, hear and feel that lives are improving and I had a part in it.

1. What motivated you to become a Functional Nutritional Lifestyle Practitioner?
After I lost my father at 22 from a massive heart attack, I realized how critical living optimally, eating clean, and mental health is paramount. My passion is to create awareness through my podcast and virtual public speaking engagements discussing how our environment has affected our health, creating toxic overload.
I have always been involved with team sports. I played team tennis in college and currently have been an avid equestrian. Eventing for the past 10 years which is similar to a triathlon for the horse - Dressage, Show Jumping, and Cross Country.
